DIY God's Eyes...

Since so many of us are on the subject of camp crafts, I thought I would do a DIY on one of my favorites! (I made them mini, but you can do them with whatever size sticks you have!)

What you will need:

Start by hot gluing 2 craft sticks together in an x shape.  Place a dot of glue in the center, on the backside of the x, and secure end of yarn, as shown.  Then flip it to the front side.

For tutorial purposes I have put letters on the front-end of the sticks, which you may choose to do if you want to practice first (just know that these letters will show on the final project).  Now, bring the yarn to the front through A & B, and down in between C & D.

Then, bring the yarn up through D & A, and down between B & C.  Continue wrapping yarn around the back of B, then the back of A.

You have now made a complete round!  Keep wrapping in this pattern, making sure that each round is pushed toward center, until you want to change colors.  On backside, secure end of yarn with a dot of glue and trim excess.

To begin next color, simply glue the new yarn on the backside of A, flip over to front, and begin wrapping in the pattern as previously stated.  Fasten off again with a dab of glue and trim end.

Continue with as many colors as you wish until you are satisfied with your piece.

And…WALLAH!  You now are the proud owner of a beautiful Ojo de Dios!  SUPER addicting, I know!  You may soon have a whole collection to hang all over your house, your car, your cubicle, and perhaps yourself (I kinda like the idea of them as earrings)!  <3

PS--since this is my first DIY, let me know what you think :)

Dwell on Design...

I'm headed out on my second annual trip to Dwell on Design @ the LA Convention Center (don't worry, more photos to come)!

Last year I fell in love with the MODERN LIVING SHOWHOUSE which was designed and decorated by Dwell and Ecofabulous...from it's reclaimed wood paneling and corrugated tin walls, to it's teensy little closet filled with lightly used Louboutins.  Ever since, I've been dreaming of erecting one of these 400 sq ft preFABbed wonders in my own backyard!

This year I got the hookup from my friend Clara, president of Scale 1:1, a contemporary furniture and lighting company producing some of the most innovative and "huggable" designs around (I'm in love with the huggable SUPERNOVA light that also comes in pretty pastels)!

Thanks so much again Clara...and I look forward to seeing you and David there!!!

The Poached Pair

Watch out world...this "Poached Pair" is conquering the cupcake-only crowd!!!

Megan Gonzalez is one half of the baking "Pair" who just recently opened up shop in old town Newhall, California in the former Mitch's Java & Jazz location (pretty cool huh?).  I wanted to interview her to get a sneak peak at the talent behind this emerging dynamic duo...what I found was pretty sweet (in so many ways)!

WW:  When did you start baking?
MG:  I didn’t start baking until after college, but as far back as I can remember my mom was whipping up sweet treats for me.  I was a super picky eater and I can even remember talking her into making brownies for my birthday instead of a traditional cake.  Food has always played an important role in my family and especially my relationship with my mom.  It’s always been this thing that bonds us, physically and emotionally.
WW:  When did you know that you wanted to do this for a living?
MG:  After college I got a job with an architecture firm in San Francisco.  I hated it.  It was stressful, and I worked long hours.  I would go back to visit my parents and unwind a bit, and my mom and I would just bake…and drink…(lol)…it was my comfort, my release. And then, after many talks and much deliberation, I took a leap of faith and quit my job in SF to move home and pursue my passion for baking.
WW:  So the next step was finding a place to set up shop?
MG:  Lol…not so fast!  First I had to go to culinary school!  But, all the while we were in the works of building a concept for our shop.

WW:  I LOVE the whole ambience of your place.  It’s not your run of the mill pastry shop.  Was there certain inspiration for the atmosphere that you wanted to create?
MG:  YES!  We were wine tasting in Napa and we just adored that small town, wine-country vibe, where California meets the Hamptons (think the kitchen in “Something’s Gotta Give” and The Bakery in “It’s Complicated”).  We envisioned a more sophisticated place…a place where I would want to go and just spend a couple hours enjoying myself.

WW:  It’s definitely a place that I could waste away the day…especially because I would never go hungry!  Tell me a little bit about all your edible delights.
MG:  I know cupcakes are all the rage right now…and we do offer an eclectic array of them…but we’re not just that.  We’ve got cookies, brownies, scones, muffins, biscotti, and even crackers.  A lot of our inspiration comes from drinking wine…and what pairs well, with say…a Port (perhaps Chocolate Mole Biscotti)?  It’s all about fresh foods, top ingredients, and playing with flavors.  I’m constantly forming recipes in my head…vacillating between sweet and savory…creating menus that are relevant throughout the entire day.

WW:  No joke…I could eat breakfast, lunch AND dinner (and don’t forget dessert) here!

Some of the distinctive flavors on the menu today:
Blueberry Goat Cheese Muffins
Bacon Cheddar Green Onion Scones
Apricot Ginger Scones
Coconut Lime Cupcakes

Thanks Megan, for sharing your time and your delicious confections with me!

To get a taste of what’s new in town, just head on over to The Poached Pair, located at

a sunny Sunday...

and we are inside cleaning up the loft/kids playroom/disaster area...This is not my ideal way of spending a weekend (AT all)...however, it does feel SO good to get stuff back in order and at least be able to walk without those pesky little Legos getting jammed between your toes!

Hey...and maybe, just maybe I will be able to turn some of my recent inspiration into reality!

I'm loving these very vintage visions...especially all the pops of red...what do you think?

...and after discovering that my boys had used a crap-ton of staples to turn one of their walls into an art gallery, I recalled a recent DIY post from Ez of Creature Comforts and a Restoration Hardware room that employed inexpensive and inventive ways to display the ever-changing array of artwork that they produce...

...clipboards and chalkboards...duh!  Why didn't I think of that?  :)

...so it's off to the craftstore I go!

WEDnesday...formerly known as HITCHED!

The bash, please production formerly known as Hitched (they recently ran into legal woes regarding the name) is "one hell of a curated event showcase for brides, grooms, and curious seekers" offering a truly unique and fresh vision of wedding planning!

The uber-talented ladies of bash eco events, yes please (together bash, please), and urbanic paper were off on a desert romp to Palm Springs when the inklings of Hitched culminated into a full blown event concept centered around FUN!  They made a list of some of the most innovative minds in the industry, gathered them under one roof, invited future brides and grooms, and ended up with a super hip wedding event that would knock ANYBODY'S socks off!

To date, two events have gone off without a "hitch" (pun intended)...the first hosted at Culver City's indoor/outdoor eco-friendly "urban oasis" Smog Shoppe...which I happened to attend back in September, and the second at the super-swank mid-century modern Ace Hotel + Swim Club in Palm Springs (which I regrettably did not)...and I was NOT disappointed!  The venue was decked out with desert plants, chic vintage furniture a la found vintage rentals, and inspirational details galore.

So...I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to some of the really "rad" wedding peeps I met that night!
